ANDROGENIC ALOPECIA

Epidemiology

AGA is extremely common affecting roughly 50% of men and perhaps as many women older than 40 years. Its incidence increases greatly in postmenopausal women. The epidemiology varies based on factors below;

  1. Race

Incidence and severity is high in white men as compared to asians, africans and african americans.

A South African study identified AGA in 4% of the female study population, while a United States study found AGA in 19% of the female study population.

  1. Age

Many of the patients show evidence of AGA by 30 years.

In females it majorly occurs following menopause.

In males it’s a common postpubertal disorder and exhibits increasing prevalence with age. A study in the United States found AGA in 16% of males between the age of 18-29 years and 53% in those aged 40-49 years.
